give them wine…

Oil on Box Canvas 610 mm X 450 mm Unframed, Ready to Hang

Title in English - give them wine if they don't get water

Title in Marathi - हे मद्यराष्ट्र व्हावे

Painting is based on the 2009 policy of the state of Maharashtra, India of granting licenses to wineries. Almost all of these are promoted by local or national level politicians or their close relatives. Wine will be produced from staple grain.

36% of the children in the state are already malnourished. There is a perennial water shortage forecast to increase over coming years. Small land-holders have been committing suicides over years. Besides the health and family-break up issues arising out of alcoholism this policy will only help pauperisation and addiction as the wine produced is supposed to be for sale in Maharashtra only.

A number of socially conscious personalities have protested strongly against this crass commercialisation of the state. The map is of the state of Maharashtra.
