At any given point of time there are more than 9 million people in prison all over the world.
Totalitarian regimes like in China, in Africa and in the middle east tend to under-report the real prisoner population to avoid criticism from Human Rights organisations. Therefore, this figure is likely to be much higher. [Of the reported 9m, highest are in the USA - 2.1m]
We do not know how many of these are innocent, how many over - sentenced, etc. either.
